Sedation

A great many people are anxious about dental treatment. This may be a result of bad experiences in the past (frequently in childhood) possibly of dental origin or as a result of hospital treatment. Common fears may be of pain, injections, fear of metal in the mouth, gag reflex. It may be that a patient is worried about a lengthy treatment such as wisdom tooth removal or implant procedures.

Fear can make people delay treatment for years and yet there are several very effective means of inducing relaxation to enable treatment to be carried out.

Sedation at Tisbury Dental Centre

Briony Wood has a great interest in the caring of nervous adults and children. She qualified from University of London in 1990. She is continually expanding her dental knowledge, obtaining Diploma in Postgraduate Dental Studies from University of Bristol and undertaking Diploma in Restorative Dentistry at Eastman Dental Hospital. She is currently working towards Diploma in Implantology at the Royal College of Surgeons, London. Briony works at all times with nurses who are qualified in dental sedation nursing. She is a member of the Society for the Advancement of Anaesthesia in Dentistry (SAAD)

Consultation
We will arrange a 20-minute pre-treatment consultation for all forms of sedation to assess the best approach for you and provide full instructions prior to sedation.
Fee: £45 (Not inc X-rays)

Oral Sedation
A short acting sedative tablet may be sufficient for simple anxiety. Its effect varies from individual to individual but can benefit adults and children – Fee: Cost of Private Prescription.

Relative Analgesia
Those who are anxious can benefit from RA. This is suitable for children and adults and has very quick recovery time. It can be used for long or short appointments. A mixture of Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas) and Oxygen is breathed through a small comfortable mask placed over the nose, and produces a feeling of relaxation and well being. It is of great advantage to patients with high blood pressure or certain heart conditions that may be made worse by the stress of dental anxiety. At all times you are able to communicate and respond to conversation. The only contraindications to RA are inability to breathe through the nose for whatever reason, or certain medical conditions and early pregnancy. Once the patient is relaxed and able to commence treatment a local anaesthetic is also given with the Wand hand piece, which is entirely different experience to the usual method of giving local anaesthetic.
Fee: £140 + Treatment Time @ £190 hr.
(Not Inc Lab fees)

This is same operator/sedation treatment

Intravenous Sedation
Extremely anxious or phobic patients may need a more profound form of sedation. In this instance the use of Midazolam is recommended, this is usually administered via a small cannula placed in a vein in the arm. It is a very controlled way of giving the right amount of sedation. The patient is not unconscious although generally unaware of treatment and very relaxed but able to respond to instructions. The patient usually remembers virtually nothing of the treatment. Fully trained staff carefully monitor throughout treatment, heart rates and oxygen levels. This form of sedation is not usually suitable for children under the age of 15. Patients must be accompanied by an adult escort for next 10 hours and must not drive, use machinery or make any important decisions.
Fee: £150 + Treatment Time @ £190 hr.
This is same operator/sedation treatment but own surgeon could provide treatment
